APRIL 1, 2014 – NY – As healthcare reform sweeps the nation, many medical professionals are pushing for fair partnerships with Medicare in order to continue providing service to their patient base. Dr. John Muney, founder of AMG Medical’s subscription-based health care service, is using his position in the steering committee of the Direct Primary Care Coalition to lobby for a repeal and replace of the SGR (sustained growth rate) Medicare currently pays its providers on a fee- for service basis. If it is not repealed by April 1st or extended, providers will see 24% reduction in their payments from Medicare, which could lead to a catastrophic outcome in which these doctors will not provide care for Medicare patients. One of the remedies they are advocating is a low monthly payment directly from Medicare and Medicaid to DPC practices. The DPCC is against the fee-for-service present payment model which is causing the US healthcare system to be so expensive and unaffordable for many Americans.
Muney’s New York City-based AMG Medical Group provides an alternate delivery of health care for those who don’t feel ready to commit to a full insurance plan. For $89 per month, members get unlimited visits, discounted prescriptions, x-rays, minor surgeries, physical therapy, and more, all without deductibles, referrals, or co-pays. Some are saying this is the “solution” to Obamacare. This method of health care is called “Direct Primary Care” (or DPC), and it could potentially save the country billions of dollars in healthcare costs per year.
Direct access healthcare eliminates almost all administrative costs, which are responsible for driving up the cost of healthcare. Most doctors have admin costs hovering around 25%. With the direct primary care method, admin costs are reduced to 2%, and all of the savings are passed to the patients.
“We recognized the high costs tacked on to healthcare when you put insurance companies into the equation and have eliminated it” Muney explains. “The way Obamacare has been implemented is absolutely wrong. With it, access to care is very, very difficult and tremendously limiting. There’s no reason for health insurers to be involved in primary care.”

The monthly fee a patient pays for DPC mean doctors can maintain much smaller patient populations, spend less time billing payers and more time providing care, and communicate with patients more by phone and email. AMG Medical Group’s facilities are fully equipped to offer comprehensive medical services including office-based surgical care, gynecological care, pediatrics, lab work, imaging, and physical therapy. Muney estimates that eighty percent of emergency visits can be taken care of in AMG’s facilities.
