RESCUING MONDAY’S … “Before making the switch to a Concierge Medicine model I truly didn’t look forward to Monday mornings,” says Michael Murray, M.D., Medical Director at Cypress Concierge Medicine. “In fact, it was my wife that insisted  I look into it. We both knew that between the stress and increasing level of dread, I wouldn’t be able to stay at it for much more than a few years. That was over 5 years ago and I’m happier and more satisfied with my work than I have been in decades. I’ve easily got 10 more years before I’d consider leaving medicine. Becoming a concierge physician was absolutely the right choice for me.”

2016_top_doc_concierge_medicineJAN 1, 2016 – Twenty-one (21) Physicians have been named to Concierge Medicine Today’s annual ‘Top Doctors In Concierge Medicine’ for 2016, a distinction held by less than one percent of doctors across the country each year. In 2010, Concierge Medicine Today, the industry’s medical news and information resource recognized fourteen (14) doctors to receive this honor. In subsequent years, only a select few have made the list. Honorees were nominated by patients, professional peers, staff and others from across the U.S. They are carefully selected and chosen by the Editors at Concierge Medicine Today, who considered such factors as: healthcare delivery innovation; clinical excellence; bedside manner; public relations; patient experience; community education; and other relevant indicators.

“Each year, we look for physicians who have made a significant impact on patients, their community, their state, social media, technology and more,” said Catherine Sykes, Publisher of the industry’s medical news and information agency, Concierge Medicine Today and its sister publication, The Direct Primary Care Journal. “As a prominent and active educational voice in this industry, we believe it is important to acknowledge and recommend specific physicians and practices, specifically within the Concierge Medicine, that reflect and demonstrate innovation, professionalism, value and the benefits of this industry.”

Dr. Harley Liker, an internist on the faculty of David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, is a consultant for the show, HOUSE MD. His job was to help guide the writing staff through the medical mystery each week. He says case studies in the New England Journal of Medicine are mined for ideas. Foster says the Web and media provide cases for episodes.

Dr. Harley Liker, an internist on the faculty of David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was a consultant for the EMMY Winning Drama, HOUSE MD. His job was to help guide the writing staff through the medical mystery each week. He notes that case studies from the New England Journal of Medicine were mined for ideas.

Over a decade ago, Dr. Harley Liker (Beverly Hills, CA) recognized that the practice of medicine was moving away from the traditional doctor patient relationship. In 2000, Dr. Liker started one of the first “concierge practices” in the United States. Dr. Liker has limited his practice size to fewer than 150 individuals and typically does not see more than a few patients in any given day. This allows him to spend extended time with each patient. It also gives him the opportunity to practice proactive medicine and build positive meaningful relationships with his patients.  This approach enables him to devote the time to consult with other leading physicians across the country and to do the necessary research to optimize the care that his patients receive.

Over the past several years, Concierge Medicine Today found distinguished doctors opening unique practices in markets like New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Georgia, Texas and Illinois. This year, physicians are prominently working in various medical specialties and internal medicine. Some of which include; Cardiology; Pediatric Care; Primary Care; Spine Surgery; Family Medicine; Hospital settings; mobile medical facilities; and even Holistic Menopause and Anti-Aging practices. The result is Concierge Medicine Today’s ‘Top Doctors In Concierge Medicine’ across America list, which includes some of the nation’s most respected specialists and outstanding primary care physicians. These are the doctors that patients, peers and other healthcare professionals recognize as the best in their fields. They do not pay a fee and are not paid to be listed. Today, as in years past, it is a list which is respected by the medical profession and patients alike as a source of quality information.

“Being a good physician is not just about knowing how to diagnose and treat disease. Honestly…that’s what books and studying is for. Being a great [Concierge] doctor means earning the trust of your patients by being honest and forthcoming. It means knowing how to communicate effectively while still remaining sympathetic. It requires you, first and foremost, to be a human being. It honestly bothers me that young doctors feel like they have to “know everything” to be a great physician. Put down the damn book and go talk to your patient. Be a human being. Be a friend. It’s really that simple.” ~ Tiffany Sizemore-Ruiz, D.O. of Choice Physicians of South Florida.

Congratulations to the following physicians named to Concierge Medicine Today’s 2016 list of ‘Top Doctors in Concierge Medicine’ who made the list (in alphabetical order):

Dr. Michael Monaco of MDVIP

“I wish I could sit down with you and tell you story after story about him [Dr. Michael Monaco of MDVIP], as it’s hard to show the expressions and hear the emotions when putting something in writing. The value that my family has received from being cared for by him in this type of practice has been incredibly significant. I would be writing a book about Dr Monaco with everything he has done for our family. I know if you would come and walk with our walking group, you would get stories and praises about Dr Monaco from them too! Many of them have been with Dr Monaco for years, even before he became a concierge doctor. He understands our life and family dynamics, our stressors and natural supports. He offers encouragements, tips and health care advice on our walks. This is healthcare delivery that is totally patient centered, one on one care with a deep understanding of who we are, what our lives are like, and we are so much healthier for it, mind body and spirit!” ~T., Patient

Since 2011, there are a growing number of physicians in secondary Concierge Medicine specialties including: Pediatrics; General Surgery; Spine Surgery; Gynecology; Dentistry; Cardiology; Addiction Medicine; Dermatology; Oncology and others. These specialty practices usually offer the same immediate access, longer appointments, and a proactive health focus similar to primary care concierge practices. Some also offer home visits. Specialists usually limit their practices to a smaller number of patients –150-300 compared to the more typical 300-750 patients for primary care. They also tend to have patients who have chronic conditions.

“To those who say concierge doctors are hurting the system by diminishing the number of patients we can care for, my reply is: if you keep doing the same thing year after year, you are going to get the same results!” said Dr. Joel Bessmer of Members.MD based in Omaha, NE. “If we don’t focus on salvaging the doctor-patient relationship and allowing the appropriate time for each patient’s care and follow-up, patients will begin to feel their primary care is a waste of time.”

“Although Concierge Medicine started out as a concept for the affluent nearly 20 years ago, over time, the movement has taken a clearly middle-class turn,” says Michael Tetreault, editor-in-chief of Concierge Medicine Today. “Today, we can see impressions of old-fashioned medical care where a doctor carries a medical bag into your home or visits you when you’re in the hospital because it’s simply the right thing to do. Moreover, there are countless people searching for these types of doctors every day than in years past. From the mid 1990’s to present day, Concierge Medicine has matured into countless service variations within our local communities. Annual fees today reflect the level of personal attention and service that a doctor provides and noticeably, patients are deciding to make a personal investment in their own healthcare.”

“I have given great consideration to what my patients’ experience with healthcare is usually like and I want to change the rushed, impersonal nature of medicine.  That’s why I have structured my practice so that we can return to the more personal care I remember from my childhood – with a focus on prevention and total wellbeing. With all the changes in healthcare of increased insurance restrictions and reporting, long waits with short visits, poor health outcomes, and an emphasis on acute care while patients are becoming more unhealthy, I decided to make a change. I wanted to be able to be proactive and focus on prevention while reversing chronic diseases.” ~Myra Ancelet Reed, MD, Panama City Beach, FL

“We are proud of the physicians named to this year’s ‘Top Doctors in Concierge Medicine’ list,” adds Sykes. “The listed physicians, are singular representatives of a modern era of healthcare delivery that is representative of old-fashioned values. These physicians and their staff, in our opinion, provide some of the most innovative approaches, ideas, educational treatments and therapies available to patients today. Together, with their healthcare teams, they are bringing patient-care and affordable access to their communities in a new level of excellence.”

The overwhelming benefits of Concierge Medicine can be summed up in two words, time and transparency. Concierge Medicine is typically understood to be a transparent, cost-effective relationship between a patient and physician in which the patient pays an annual fee or retainer. All Concierge Doctors generally claim to be accessible via telephone or email at any time of day or night or offer some other service above and beyond the customary care. While all Concierge Medicine practices share similarities, they vary widely in their service offering, payment requirements, cost and form of operation. Many Concierge Doctors also accept and/or participate in insurance and Medicare. Most important to note, Concierge Medicine fees are for services that are not covered by Medicare or the patients insurance. What is also fundamental to the various clinics operating a Concierge Medicine practice across the country is that patients decide to make a personal investment in their own healthcare.
