http://www.meccamedical.com/ – After 10 years in a large practice where she handled more than 3,500 patient visits each year, board-certified family physician Dr. Dena Lacara decided she was ready for a change. The doctor-patient relationship is the cornerstone of primary care, but has become increasingly difficult to cultivate as doctors are pressured to see more patients in less time, she says. I was lucky to be part of an amazing group, but I needed to follow my vision and create something new.

Dr. Lacara is going out on her own, focusing on personalized, relationship-driven health care. Her new practice, opened in October, is limited to 400 patients. They pay a monthly fee in exchange for access to Dr. Lacara at any time, including office visits, house calls and phone consultsshe will even accompany them to specialist visits in select circumstances. I wanted to work with fewer patients, but be available to them 24/7 via phone, email, text or skype, she says. I see it as an opportunity to build stronger relationships with my patients and help keep them healthy overall, instead of solely focusing on treating a specific disease or problem.
By emphasizing lifestyle modification and not just medical interventions, Dr. Lacara hopes to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that will extend far beyond the confines of an annual physical exam.
