http://www.meccamedical.com/ – After 10 years in a large practice where she handled more than 3,500 patient visits each year, board-certified family physician Dr. Dena Lacara decided she was ready for a change. “The doctor-patient relationship is the cornerstone of primary care, but has become increasingly difficult to cultivate as doctors are pressured to see more patients in less time,” she says. “I was lucky to be part of an amazing group, but I needed to follow my vision and create something new.”

Dr. Lacara is going out on her own, focusing on personalized, relationship-driven health care. Her new practice, opened in October, is limited to 400 patients. They pay a monthly fee in exchange for access to Dr. Lacara at any time, including office visits, house calls and phone consults—she will even accompany them to specialist visits in select circumstances. “I wanted to work with fewer patients, but be available to them 24/7 via phone, email, text or skype,” she says. “I see it as an opportunity to build stronger relationships with my patients and help keep them healthy overall, instead of solely focusing on treating a specific disease or problem.”

By emphasizing lifestyle modification and not just medical interventions, Dr. Lacara hopes to provide patients with a holistic approach to health care that will extend far beyond the confines of an annual physical exam.
