It’s no secret that I dig Boca VIPediatrics. The business is run by a Boca Mompreneur, they recently had their official grand opening as active members of the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce AND Mr. VIPediatric himself, Dr. Chad Rudnick, is available to his patients 24/7.
YES. 24/7.
So, that got me thinking, what exactly does a typical “work day” look like for Boca’s only concierge pediatrician? Does he eat? Sleep? Have time to sit by the pool or read a magazine?
I decided to ask him…
Early Morning – I wake up, have my coffee, and take our dog, Snuggie, for a walk. I shoot off some follow up text messages or emails just to check-in on anyone who I spoke with the night/day prior with colds, coughs, fevers, rashes to make sure things are improving.
I get a text asking if I can see Emily in the office before school starts, her allergies are acting up and mom wants to bring her in for me to take a look at what’s going on.
My reply reads, “You got it! See you at the office in 30 minutes.”
I’ll typically see a couple sick visits in the early morning, so no one has to miss any school or work. Since we have a very limited patient base, we schedule just one VIP family for an extended appointment, so the office is typically just your family and my staff for your visit. That means no wait times, and no other sick kids around.
Late Morning – I’m off to a house call in Boynton Beach (black bag in tow!) for Baby Ella, who is just 5 days new. I always do the first newborn visit as a house call to be able to spend the time needed with the parents and baby. I also know what a pain it can be to put a newborn in the car, days after giving birth, on no sleep and wait in a waiting room with exposure to germs…so the first newborn exam is done in the comfort of my VIPs’ homes.
I typically block out 1-2 hours to do my exam, and answer questions/give tips on everything from sleeping to breastfeeding to bath-time and everything in between.
Afternoon – I get a call from a mom who notices a rash on her 10 year old when she picked him up from school. She Facetimes with me right from the school parking lot for a “virtual visit.” Diagnosis and treatment plan were made right over the phone, saving mom the hassle of driving to the office when an in-person visit wasn’t needed.
Late Afternoon/Early Evening – A text comes in from a dad with a teething toddler. After giving a few tips via text, I send an article his way from my blog, (http://www.chadrudnick.blogspot.com).
A few minutes later, my cell phone rings, (which we lovingly call “The Bat-Phone” – the ringtone is the theme song from ‘Beverly Hills Cop,’ in case you were wondering), and it’s a mom of a 4-year-old with a low grade fever. It’s already past 8PM and most pediatric offices are closed for the night. I’m able to chat with mom about some of Jacob’s other symptoms and I’m monitoring the fever by checking in a couple more times throughout the night, just to provide reassurance and a plan in case things worsen during the middle of the night.
Evening – After eating dinner with my family, and putting my daughter, Aria, to bed, I’m usually watching a sports game (Heat, Marlins, Gators) and enjoying family time. Ashley is not only my wife, but my business partner, so we both enjoy being home together with our daughter and hanging out as a family.
Late Night – My phone doesn’t usually ring late at night unless it’s an urgent matter, and at 11PM…uh-oh! It’s ringing! A mom of a 2-year-old calls and is concerned because Rachel’s little cold has turned into a bad barking cough. I ask if she can send me a quick video and I hear that it’s croup (a virus that affects the tissues around the larynx, that can require an immediate steroid).
In most cases with a traditional pediatric practice, a parent would be sent to the E.R. to receive treatments at this time of night. With my trusty black bag in hand again, I’m off to their home to do an evaluation and provide medication on-the-spot.
While emergencies must be seen and handled in an E.R., I’m so happy I was able to save this family the hours of waiting and hospital bill for urgent, but non-emergent care.
What is your favorite part of your day?
My favorite part of the day is the tradition that my wife and I have strived to make happen every night since our daughter was born. We do her bedtime routine (bath, bottle, book, bed) I love this precious time and we love story-time with our daughter.

When is your next vacation? 
With a 1-year-old in tow, vacations are certainly harder to come by these days!
Living in beautiful Boca Raton, we are lucky enough to do lots of fun day trips and “stay-cations” (thanks MBMom for all the great tips!) when we can. My brother is getting married next weekend on Miami Beach and we are looking forward to our “big getaway,” only 45 minutes away from home!
